Process Development Engineers – Biomass Processing Group - 2 positions open
  1. Emphasis on early to mid-stage development; Innovator with a history of follow through to commercializationPhD in engineer  leading process design and process simulations skills
  2. Emphasis on mid-stage to ate stage development with strong  process design and process simulations skills;  BS or MS Engineer with process development skills
These seem like great opportunities to make a huge impact with zero “corporate red tape”. Get in near the ground floor in this established and well-funded startup company. They are working to develop a “Green” source of traditional petrochemicals used to make plastics!  Your success in this position is a key step in the overall company’s success.

The company:
  • Working to develop a novel process that converts sustainable biomass materials into renewable chemicals, they have successfully demonstrated the reactive process step in a large pilot plant. Only one more hurtle remains.
  • Employees include well-respected and technically accomplished engineers and scientist with a career history in well-known process development organizations.
  • They are a professionally run organization with specific well-planned goals and objectives, stated company values like “honesty and integrity”, and world renowned business partners who provide the catalyst, additional R&D support, and process design assistance for commercial plant construction.
  • They are funded in part by large companies who are interested in the final product. For example, an investor might be interested in a “green” source of plastic for making beverage bottles or car parts. This lines-up with their intent to commercialize a process.  It seems that renewed funding is attainable via a ‘stage-gate like’ progress analysis.
  • HQ in suburban Rockland County NY with many different types of areas to live including some areas with lower than expected Cost of Living; Expect travel to the Pilot Plant near Beaumont.
    • Haverstraw NY COL index = 120 with a low crime rate.
    • - OR -  live in NYC for fun, but COL = 180.
    • There are many types of neighborhoods.
I’m happy to tell you who they are once I see a resume draft and know something about your background.  We’ll talk BEFORE I forward your resume.  I will also send you more specific details about the pilot plant successes to date and the information that I have about where employees live. (By definition the Nat’l Average COL is 100 and I use bestplaced.net to get statistics per community)

Features and Benefits:
  • Expect a competitive salary plus stock options along with a nice benefits package including paid vacation & holidays, group medical & dental benefits (intended to attract top talent from larger corporations) plus annual employee reviews with raises retroactive to the 1st of the year.
  • As a small-company, there is no corporate ‘red tape’ and the work culture is hands-on, business like but casual!Plus, as a ground-floor opportunity all employees have a vested interest in the success.
  • You’ll make a big impact on the success of the company and it will be rewarding to see the quick progress.
The work:   Initially, you’ll be responsible for developing a continuous process to chemically wash a solid feed stock. Your odds of success are very high in that the feasibility of the process has been shown to be reproducible in a large batch process, and it is now time to create a continuously operating process to meet commercial and economic targets. Participate in steps from testing to modeling to scale-up.
  • Conceive of multiple solids feed system options and conduct experiments to build models and compare costs. (*PhD candidate will likely emphasis work in this area)
  • Lead pilot plant design and operations; assist vendors with its design and develop the test plan for data acquisition; take a leading role in the commissioning the front-end solids handling steps in the pilot plant.
  • Use the pilot plant data and process simulation to create a basic engineering package for commercial scale-up. (*BS/ MS ChE might focus in this area)
  • Moving forward, you will provide project engineering support for commercial plant design
(* Keep in mind that they are very TEAM ORIENTED and will tailor the work to match the strengths of these two new employees along with the current team leader)

Background Qualifications:   Extensive (likely from the pulp & paper industry, fresh fruit and vegetable processing with washing steps, or mining to experience with solids and slurry handling, spray processes, industrial washers, dewatering, drying processes, and conveyor systems metal processing with washing steps).  A high degree of creativity, problem solving, process modeling, and economic modeling know-how to identify potential process options.
  • Hire 1: Master’s or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Paper Science, or relates
    • a track record of patented innovations
    • 10 + years industry experience with new process development through conception to pilot plant operations to commercialization, including direct experience with systems to continuously process solids
  • Hire 2:: B.S. or M.S. ChE
    • 5+ years of experience in process development including pilot plant support, process simulations, and front-end design
    • some experience with solids or slurry processing
Footnote: Current employees have expertise in petrochemical process development and these new hires will bring new skills to the solid feed portion of the process.
